We are happy to report that the Minneapolis City Council recently approved the settlement of our client, Ana Gelhaye’s (“Ms. Gelhaye) excessive force case against the City of Minneapolis for $900,000. A link to the article describing the settlement is below.
During the George Floyd protests, a Minneapolis Police Officer shot Ms. Gelhaye in her right eye with a rubber projectile while she was passing out milk to protestors who officers were tear gassing. As a result of this shooting, Ms. Gelhaye sustained partial permanent vision loss in her right eye.
Ms. Gelhaye and our law firm are extremely pleased with this settlement, as we believe it will result in Minneapolis Police Officers drastically changing their approach to how they respond to peaceful protestors who are exercising their First Amendment rights. The sad but true reality in this country is that too often a government actor or government agency will only change its conduct after being successfully sued.
