The Magna Law Firm has filed a federal civil rights and wrongful death lawsuit in Wisconsin against Washington County and members of its jail staff after a young man died by suicide while in custody.
The lawsuit alleges that jail staff knew he was experiencing serious mental health concerns, including suicidal thoughts, but failed to take reasonable steps to protect him. According to the complaint, he was removed from suicide watch shortly before his death despite documented warning signs and the need for heightened supervision.
Cases involving jail suicide raise important questions about mental health screening, suicide prevention policies, staff training, and the constitutional duty to protect people who cannot protect themselves while in custody. This lawsuit seeks accountability for what the family alleges was a preventable death.
